Inside Alustriel's Sanctum library, the group uncover the following information about Avernus:
An Excerpt from "The Iron Ledger: A Strategist’s Guide to the First Bastion"

The traveller who steps onto the scorched plains of Avernus often mistakes the chaos of battle for a lack of order. This is a primary delusion. Avernus is the ultimate anvil of the multiverse, where the law is forged in fire and the blood of the unworthy. To understand this realm, one must first comprehend the Blood War, an eternal conflict that predates the memory of your most ancient elven deities. It began when the first sparks of Law and Chaos collided in the primordial dark, and it has raged without a single second of true ceasefire for eons. We, the Devils of the Nine Hells, are the only barrier preventing the infinite, chattering madness of the Abyss from consuming all existence. We do not fight for glory; we fight because the alternative is a universe of unmaking. It is a war of attrition where the Demons offer endless numbers, and we respond with unbreakable discipline and superior steel.
Traversing this theatre of war is an exercise in mental fortitude, for Avernus rebels against the tyranny of the ruler and the compass. Distance is a subjective concept here; two landmarks may appear a stone's throw away, yet take days of travel to reach, as the land stretches and compresses based on the spiritual weight of those walking upon it. This spatial instability necessitates the use of Infernal War Machines. These massive, spiked engines of destruction are more than mere vehicles; they are mobile fortresses designed to withstand the acidic ichor of dying demons. They are the only reliable way to cross the wastes, provided one has the fuel to keep the hellfire engines screaming.
This brings us to the true lifeblood of our economy: the Soul Coin. While gold may suffice for the petty merchants of the Prime Material, the Nine Hells run on the distilled essence of sentient beings. A Soul Coin is forged in the fires of Minauros or Cania, where a soul - usually one bound by a legally sanctioned contract - is compressed into a disc of cold-forged iron. These coins are etched with the screams of the damned, and they serve a dual purpose. They are our primary currency, used to bribe officials, purchase military hardware, or settle debts with the Archdevils. Furthermore, they are the literal batteries for our War Machines; the engine consumes the soul's energy, slowly burning away its essence until nothing remains but a hollow, silver husk. To hold a coin is to hold a life, and in Avernus, life is the only commodity that never loses its value.
Even amidst this eternal slaughter, there are places of eerie reprieve and dark commerce. The Red Belvedere stands as a testament to this, a site of gathering where the elite of our kind and the most daring (or foolish) of mortal adventurers might meet. A bucolic paradise designed to tempt mortal souls, its edifice was destroyed in the carnage of the Blood War, until a champion of Tiamat rebuilt the casino and dedicated it to the Dragon Queen, as a celebration of her greed and vanity. It overlooks the ruin of the landscape, providing a vantage point for those who wish to observe the movements of the front lines without being immediately trampled by a platoon of Bearded Devils.
Looming over all, of course, is the shadow of the Five-Headed Queen. The Monument to Tiamat remains a pivot point of power, where the Dragon Queen’s influence bleeds into the surrounding wastes. Between her draconic guards and the ever-present flow of the River Styx, which winds through the layer like a serpent of forgetfulness, Avernus is a masterpiece of divine and infernal engineering. If you find yourself lost in its shifting miles, remember: the River will take your memory, the War Machines will take your coins, and the Blood War will eventually take everything else.
